Video Time!

Finishing my video was a process that consisted of hours of editing the video to ensure a smooth flowing video. Watching my own video made me miss rock climbing since due to my education the amount of time I can put to rock climbing has greatly decreased. In the final video, I realized that I didn’t include as much non-interview content as I should have included, however, there was a lack of information I felt I could have added. This project was one of my favorites as it lets me see the hobbies that my fellow students love but I get to showcase my hobby to my peers. I hope that in showing my video I may introduce people to a sport that is enjoyable and hopefully push them to give it a shot.

Story

One of the most memorable time’s rock climbing is when I went to Red Rocks in the state of Nevada. Red Rocks is known as one of the best outdoor rock climbing locations in the world / North America. When I went to visit my grandparents in Las Vegas, my brother and I realized that we had several days of free of the family planned events so we took the chance to visit one if the most beautiful rock climbing places in the world. (Included below are pictures from the trip). My fondest memory from this trip was watching my brother climb one of the Bouldering routes available (featured picture). I wasn’t able to attempt to climb this due to me not having my climbing shoes, so I was stuck doing low-level routes. This is my favorite memory because this was one of the first times that I visited a major climbing location and I was able to see my brother climb one of the hardest routes that he would ever send.

All videos used in the final production were recorded either by me or friends of my brother/I. These videos were taken by means of a cellphone.

Ethnography

For my video, I interviewed my brother on all the things that he would like to say to people that know nothing or little about rock climbing. Even though I have been rock climbing for about 4 years I have still yet to try ever type of rock climbing so even I learned things from interviewing him. Rock climbing appears in a fair amount of action movies to attempt to show how extreme and strong the characters are, some examples of this are in the mission impossible series, 300, and star trek. The next post will talk about what sources I will be using in my video.

Making the climb to become fit with rock climbing

For my ethnography, I will show the reasons to why I enjoy rock climbing. Going through high school I have met very few people around me who also rock climbing or have even been rock climbing. Making this project on rock climbing will hopefully show people that rock climbing can be a fun and healthy way to hang out with friends and get fit.

Rock climbing was first introduced to me during my freshmen year of high school. My brother had been rock climbing for a few years and he finally had the urge to see if I wanted to join him. Going through middle school and high school I had been an overweight child, so my self-confidence had been low at the time. When I first started climbing I was too shy and too scared to climb in front of others due to my lack of skill so when I climbed it would be on a wall that no one else was on and was out of the way of people. As I began to lose weight I gained more confidence, which meant that I was actually climbing and practicing more when I would go to the rock gym, this began to become a snowballing effect which eventually led into actually being confident enough to try to climb on any wall in front of whoever. Ever since this change, I have realized that rock climbing is a great sport and promotes positive mental and physical health.

Over the past few weeks I have read numerous scholarly postings about the effects of rock climbing, interviewed my brother about rock climbing, and lastly, I have created a video that will show why rock climbing is a great sport and hobby. All rock climbing clips that are included in the video were pre-recorded from trips that my brother and I have made and the interview was recorded over my Thanksgiving break using my phone. Hopefully, my creation meets the expectations of both my peers and my professor.
